Art

The Students

"Through art we see and understand other cultures; you can see the evolution of time and the differences today; you can understand the history of the world through art images." "In some instances art can cause people who look at my art work to view the world in a different way, perhaps more positively...I enjoy the power I have to create something of my own and completely unique."

Art students receive recognition at Facey in a variety of ways. We believe it is essential to get art into the hallways, display cases, library and cafeteria. When you first walk into Bev Facey you will notice all the colorful banners designed by art students. In the main foyer we have a display case dedicated to the "Artist of the Week." In the office area we have framed student art as part of our "Permanent Art Collection." In the Elk Island Public Schools Central Office we have a permanent space for student art. Open House, Parent-Teacher Interview evenings and Fine Arts Night allow the teacher to showcase art and the Art 30s have their own "Grad Show" in June. Finally, students are recognized with Honor certificates and Fine Art Awards in June.

The Program

Students at Bev Facey choose Art 10, 20, or 30 for 5 credits. In each class students study: art history, drawing, sculpture, design, painting and printmaking through a variety of MEDIA and CREATIVE projects. FIELD TRIPS are essential for students to draw and observe art outside the classroom. By the time students are in Art 30 (a recognized entrance course for university) they are developing a personal style while allows them to develop a portfolio. Some Art 30 students submit a portfolio to the College Board for extra credits at a university (this is called Advanced Placement).

Allan Milne is enthusiastic about another year of artistic expression at Facey. He feels strongly about art at Bev Facey as it gives students the ability to express themselves in ways that other subjects cannot, while also giving students the tools to create art where there was nothing... and having fun at the same time! When he isn't in the classroom, Mr. Milne enjoys working on soapstone carvings, painting, and staying physically active. Mr. Milne also has a busy schedule at home with his wonderful wife, son and daughter!
